Charles Lummis was once featured in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, the nationally syndicated news panel, for his “tramp across the continent” from Ohio to Los Angeles in 1884-85. When Lummis reached the San Gabriel Mission, he was accompanied the rest of the way into Los Angeles by Harrison Gray Otis, publisher and editor of the Los Angeles Times.
